Are Dental Implants Safe?
Dental implants are safe with a very high rate of success. Long-term studies of this restoration support the strong benefits that come from replacing missing teeth with dental implants. Working with our staff at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery, we can customize a treatment plan to restore the root system for one, two, multiple or even all of your teeth. Once a solid foundation has been established, we can then stabilize some different dental devices with the implant serving as an anchor or part of an anchor system.
Most dental implants are made of titanium, a highly biocompatible metal. Titanium has been noted for its strength and that the bone is willing to grow around it and heal. These attributes have made titanium the material of choice for repairs by surgeons for some procedures including hip surgery, knee surgery and more.
Besides titanium, there are limited ceramic zirconia options for dental implants. Zirconia is often called a metal-free option, though it does contain some metal. Patients often recognize zirconia as being more of a crystal material. This option may be more appropriate for patients who have metal sensitivity because it contains no nickel. Additionally, it may be a better option for patients who have lost significant tissue making the dark color of titanium metal more visible opposed to the white coloring of ceramic zirconia.
Dental implants have a very high rate of success, in fact, they have been noted for being the best long-term dental restoration of any other restoration options. This is because teeth restored with implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, and their placement involves the rebuilding and strengthening of the bone for support. Long-term studies have shown a greater than 95% success rate with continuing high rates of success after ten years and more, in fact, many patients still retain their implants after more than thirty years of placement.
