Tooth Extraction
Westlake Village, CA

Teeth may need to be removed for some reasons. Some patients may require a tooth to be extracted because it is poorly positioned, it is impacted, or the tooth is unhealthy. Working with an oral surgeon’s office when having a tooth removed is ideal because even a simple extraction can quickly turn into a surgical extraction. Having your procedure done in an environment that is set up to meet your surgical needs will help you achieve better results for healing and the future of your now empty tooth socket. Our team at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery can assist you in evaluating and determining if extraction is the right decision for your needs.

When a Tooth Needs to Be Removed

The removal of a tooth is a decision that we do not take lightly; it is always done because it will improve the patient’s oral health. Teeth are removed under the following circumstances:
•  Poorly Positioned: Some teeth come in creating a bad bite for the patient. This may be due to overcrowding, extra teeth, or a tooth that erupted in an unusual position. When teeth are removed due to positioning, this is done working in tandem with an orthodontist, who will then see to the patient's bite.
•  Impacted: An impacted tooth is a tooth that does not erupt, or fully erupts. A tooth can become impacted when there is lack of room or if the tooth is poorly positioned. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are often impacted due to a lack of sufficient space. An impacted tooth is subject to decay. Food debris and bacteria can enter space between the tooth and gums causing decay and gum disease.
•  Unhealthy: An unhealthy tooth is a tooth that is damaged beyond repair. This may be a tooth that is severely decayed, fractured or broken beyond repair, or has died. An unhealthy tooth can be painful and damaging to neighboring teeth.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

In general, tooth extractions are grouped into one of two categories, simple or surgical. Though your dentist may believe that they can perform a simple extraction, it is best to see an oral surgeon because a simple extraction can turn into a surgical extraction very quickly.

Simple Tooth Extraction
A simple tooth extraction is done when the tooth is fully extended from the gums and wholly intact. The surgeon can use a tool known as an elevator to lift the tooth from the socket and then remove the tooth with forceps.

Surgical Tooth Extraction
A surgical tooth extraction is needed when the tooth is fractured, broken, or impacted. The surgeon will need to make surgical cuts to the soft tissue to gain full access to the tooth. In some cases, the surgeon may need to quarter the tooth, or break it into pieces and remove the tooth piece by piece. This process can take extra time. The patient will then have sutures places which will need to be removed days following the surgery.
