The Dental Implants Procedure

Dental implants, which we provide here at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery, are a modern treatment for replacing missing teeth. This treatment uses small titanium posts, which we surgically implant into your jawbone, to support your replacement teeth. The posts are integrated into the jaw in a process known as osseointegration, which is the process in which your bone fuses to the implants. Implants are the most popular treatment available for restoring your mouth after tooth loss. The process of getting dental implants is more involved than traditional treatments.

Dental Implant Benefits

Dental implants provide numerous benefits.
•  You are able to bite and chew more effectively. This aids in not only allowing you to eat your favorite foods but can also improve your overall nutrition as well.
•  Improved speech.
•  The ceramic crowns look and feel just like your natural teeth, restoring your beautiful smile. This can also give you a boost of confidence.
•  Greater comfort. Your teeth are supported by titanium posts, rather than your gums.
•  Implants protect the health of your jawbone. The posts stimulate your bone just like your natural teeth, which stops and prevents bone loss.

Your Initial Consultation

Dental Implant diagram at Westlake Oral and Plastic SurgeryBefore undergoing surgery, you first need an initial consultation. This consultation is designed to ensure that your jaw, and your overall health, are in good condition. We conduct a visual exam, checking your teeth and gums for signs of decay, cavities and gum disease. We will take digital images of your mouth so that we can assess the condition of your jawbone, and to determine if there is sufficient bone mass remaining to support the necessary posts, or if you will need a bone graft first. Images can also be used to formulate a customized treatment plan. Your consultation also includes a discussion of your health history, as well as a discussion about your sedation options.

Your Surgical Procedure

Dental implant surgery is done under a local anesthetic as well as sedation. Sedation enables you to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout your procedure. When we are ready to begin, we make small incisions in your gum tissue, exposing the bone underneath. Next, we drill holes into the bone and insert the titanium posts inside. Finally, we suture your gums closed around the posts and placed temporary teeth.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery after implant surgery can take several weeks to several months. During this time, it is important to rest, avoiding any strenuous activities, including bending over, and heavy lifting. A healthy diet is also key to recovery, but you will need to avoid hard, sticky, chewy, and crunchy foods. You will need to stick to soft, even liquid, foods, especially in the early stages. As you begin to heal, you can slowly resume normal diet and activities. We will provide you with a specific set of post-op care instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery.

Your recovery will also include several follow up visits. These visits are designed for us to check on the condition of your mouth and make sure that the implants are integrating properly into your jaw. They are also meant to make sure that you are not experiencing any complications.

Getting Your Permanent Teeth

Once you have fully healed, we create your permanent replacement crowns. This takes two final appointments. At the first appointment, we remove the temporary teeth and place the abutments. Impressions are taken of your mouth. These impressions are sent to a dental lab, where they are used to design and create your permanent replacement teeth. This process can take up to two weeks. Once the teeth are ready, you return for your last appointment, where your new teeth are securely screwed into place.

While the process of getting dental implants is more involved than traditional treatments, the benefits make the procedure worth it. For more information, and to find out if dental implants are right for you, call Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery today (805) 267-9766.
