Implants are available in varying widths and lengths depending on the work being done and the amount of bone available. There are options of materials being used. Modern dentistry has advanced metal-free implant options. Our surgeons at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery will review these options with you and help you create the ideal treatment plan.

Titanium Implants

The first choice for many patients is the time-tested titanium material for their dental implants. Titanium is used in many surgical repairs, not just teeth, titanium is used by surgeons in hip replacements, in knee replacements, and when making repairs to the bone with rods, plates, and pins. This metal has been proven to be extremely biocompatible, with a high rate of the bone successfully bonding to the metal. Studies have shown that a very small percentage of the population suffers from any titanium based allergic reactions.

There are several benefits that come with a titanium implant, including:
•  Strong and Lightweight: Titanium has an extraordinary combination of being very strong while being lightweight, making it an optimum metal for implantation.
•  Biocompatible: Biocompatible generally refers to a item not being rejected, but the titanium implant also is ideal for incorporating with your bone. The properties involved is an ideal environment to promote your tissue and bone material to attach and incorporate.
•  Time Tested: Titanium implants have been used for decades, and we have decades of research to back up the longevity and durability of this product.

Metal Free Zirconium Implants

Until recently, dental implants were exclusively made using titanium. Titanium is a strong metal that is light in weight and very biocompatible with bone. In most cases, titanium is the ideal product for a dental implant. Some patients would prefer a metal-free option. Recent development has added zirconium as an option for dental implants. Studies have show zirconium to be a metal free option that is safe and reliable as an alternative to titanium.

There are several benefits that come with a zirconium implant, including:
•  All Ceramic: Zirconium implants are metal free. Created using ceramic, zirconium implants have been found to be a durable product.
•  One Piece: Zirconium implants are manufactured to include the implant and abutment as one piece. This is different from the two, or even three, pieces used in standard titanium implants and abutments.
•  Less Space for Bacteria: With the device being combined into one piece, there is less room for bacteria to gather or hide. Some patients have found this to assist in the long-term success of the implant.
•  Aesthetically Better: With no metal, the zirconium implant is all tooth colored, no dark metal coloring to show through.
