Stitch Options We Use During Oral Surgery

Stitch Options We Use During Oral SurgeryWhen we do oral surgery, we try really hard to make sure we use as few stitches as possible. However, there are times when we don't have a choice, we have to use stitches. If we need to place stitches, it is usually because we need to control your bleeding.

We also need to make sure your oral surgery is healing properly and keep infection at bay. There are two kinds of thread we use: dissolvable stitches, which are also called absorbable stitches and stitches we have to take out in a few days or a couple of weeks. We use those threads to suture your wound closed. If you have been wondering about what kind of suture techniques we use, here are some common types.

Common Suture Techniques

The first suture technique is called the interrupted stitch. It is used when we have to extract a single tooth, or when we are placing a single implant.

We also use a Figure Eight stitch, especially if we have a difficult extraction. Sometimes we also need to use it when we have to remove growths in your mouth. Another kind of suture is called an external horizontal mattress stitch, which we use when we do bone grafts or implants, especially for larger surgeries, because we need to close gaps between the tissues. If we feel your surgery needs a really strong closure, we can do an external vertical mattress stitches. These mattress stitches make a nice even line and hold together well.

Sometimes, when we are doing a bone graft, or removing a mandibular tori (a benign growth), we use a continuous stitch. These are great stitches, but we don't use them when our surgical work will be visible.
