How We Can Help with an Oral BurnWhy did the patient burn their mouth? Because they ate pizza or drank coffee before it was cool! So, you've burned the roof of your mouth.

What next? You could wait a few days for the pain to go away, but the truth is there are things your oral surgeon can do to help with the pain right now. Also, a burn can sometimes turn into a more serious issue and cause an infection. It is best to leave these things in the hands of professionals.

Pain Relievers and Antiseptic Wash

For a mild burn, we can prescribe pain relievers. Pain relievers help to reduce the swelling associated with burns. After a burn, the nerve endings are going crazy and swelling just tends to make the pain worse. That being said a ticket to relief could be a plain old pain reliever.

For more serious burns that blister we would wash your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash. The mouth is filled with bacteria that could lead to an infection if not treated. An antiseptic mouthwash can keep the affected area germfree and promote a faster recovery.

Apply Benzocaine

If the pain is rather serious benzocaine can be applied to significantly reduce the irritation. Benzocaine is a local anesthetic most often used as a topical pain reliever and can be used to treat burns that display a large amount of pain. It will help immediately and leave your mouth feeling numb as a result. This can be great, especially if in extreme discomfort.

If you have burned your mouth schedule a consultation with us today. We can take a look at it and assess the seriousness of the wound. If further treatment is necessary, we can recommend what would be the best course of action. Remember, even a minor burn can turn into something serious in a relatively short amount of time.
