Reasons Your Body May Reject an Oral Implant

Reasons Your Body May Reject an Oral ImplantWhile it doesn't happen very often, it is possible for your body to reject a dental implant. If you're coming in to have a post implanted for a fake tooth or for All-on-4 implants, we will do a number of different tests to make certain the implants will take.

However, it's not always possible to tell if someone is going to reject an implant until the implant is installed. If your body does reject it, here are a few reasons why.

Titanium Allergy

Most dental implants are made from titanium, and while it's rare, it is possible for someone to be allergic to the metal. Usually, though, we can test for this allergy and look at alternative materials if you are allergic. Surveys have shown that out of all patients who were considering dental implants, less than 1% had a titanium allergy.

Bacteria

Another reason for your body to reject an implant is bacteria. Bacteria lives in your mouth all the time, but it shouldn't get into your jawbone. If it does, it's possible that it can actually spread, causing multiple implants to fail.

Improper Care
While they are permanent and very durable, you do need to care for your implants. This means brushing and flossing your teeth regularly just like you would natural teeth. If you don't, it's possible that your mouth can become full of bad bacteria. This can lead to bacteria getting in and around the implant, causing the body to reject it.

Grinding Your Teeth

If you grind your teeth, you may actually push your implants out of their position, causing your body to begin rejecting them. To avoid this, you'll want to wear a mouthguard while you sleep. This will also help with a number of other issues, including soreness in your jaw.
