How to Repair a Cleft LipYou may have seen the pictures of a child with a cleft lip. It is something that affects the way a person looks and their ability to do some things. It is also something that we can repair. Left lips come in all sorts of varieties from big to small. The process of repairing a cleft lip will vary some, but follows a similar pattern.

What is a Cleft Lip?

A baby born with an opening in their lip has a cleft lip. It is a birth defect that occurs during the first 6 to 10 weeks of the pregnancy. At this time the lip does not completely fuse together in the way it should. A cleft lip can range from a small space in the lip to something that runs all the way up to the nose. There is a way to correct a cleft lip.

Cleft Lip Repair

The repair of a cleft lip requires a surgical procedure. The type of anesthesia depends on the severity of the cleft lip and ranges from IV sedation to general anesthesia. An incision close to the place where the separation of the lip allows for reconnection of the tissue. Once the tissue gets connected, the incision is closed.

It is best to have this type of surgery done between the ages of 9 to 12 months. It is also possible to include other procedures to correct any other problems the cleft lip caused. Orthodontics can help in this way.

Repairing a cleft lip can improve the appearance of an individual immensely. It is not always perfect, but it is something that can make a person feel better about themselves.
