Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?

When determining candidacy for dental implants, it’s important to review several factors. Primarily, whom you are trusting such a large, and important job too. Implants placed by a skilled oral surgeon have a higher success rate, greater than 95% in long-term studies, than having it done elsewhere. This is in part due to the preparatory steps taken before surgery. At Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery, we understand the importance of evaluating and creating an individualized treatment plan before placing your implants.

Why Choose An Oral Surgeon for Your Implant Surgery?

An oral surgeon is a dental specialist. This means that they have completed their dental degree earning their DDS or DMD and then went on to complete an additional four to six years of in training, most of which would have been done in a hospital-based surgical environment. Oral surgeons agree to not practice in areas of dentistry outside of their scope, focusing strictly on dental surgical procedures. Procedures include tooth extractions, the removal of cysts and tumors, the repair of damaged or broken facial bones, jaw related surgeries including realignment, surgical procedures to correct bites, TMJ dysfunction surgeries, and the placement of dental implants.

An Oral Surgeon is better equipped to determine if you are a candidate, or what preparatory steps are needed, before the surgical insertion of a dental implant. Some of the key areas that they will exam during your evaluation include:

•  Gum Health: A common issue in patients who require implants is chronic periodontitis. This exaggerated form of gum disease can be damaging to your bone and soft tissue. We will want to restore your gums to health before surgery.
•  Bone Health: If your bone density has diminished due to missing teeth or chronic periodontitis, we will need to rebuild the bone and strengthen it through a bone graft procedure prior to surgery.
•  Ability to Heal Properly: The ability to heal at a normal rate is vital to the success of implant placement. Some patients may have diminished healing due to smoking tobacco, medications they are taking, or medical conditions such as diabetes. These issues do not eliminate your candidacy for surgery, but may mean that we need to take other steps or communicate with your physician to make adjustments.

Dental implants are available in a wide variety of options, including standard implants, mini implants, and elongated implants for securing dentures in a one-day treatment. Don’t determine your candidacy, schedule an evaluation with one of our surgeons at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery. Implant procedures are minimally invasive, meaning they are approved for even our more medically delicate patients.
