Preparation for Dental Implants![]() MedicationsIf you take any medication, you should take it as normal the day of your surgery, unless otherwise directed. In this event, you may have a small amount of water. Stock Up Your HomeRest is an essential part of the healing process, and you should avoid going out or doing anything too strenuous during this time. Have your home prepared so that you can relax as soon as you arrive. Stock up your refrigerator and cabinets with foods that can be consumed with little to no effort, as chewing may be difficult for the first few days or weeks. Have a place ready to sit or lie down, and place extra pillows nearby to keep your head elevated. Have a small table within reach with books or other easy activities to keep you busy. Have plenty of pain relievers and ice packs ready to go. Dress ComfortablyDress comfortably for your appointment. Wear loose fitting clothing and flat, comfortable shoes. Do not wear any jewelry, watches or contacts. You should also avoid wearing perfume or cologne, makeup or nail polish. Oral CareMake sure that you brush and floss your teeth, as well as thoroughly rinse your mouth, before arriving at your appointment. This will help to limit the number of bacteria in your mouth, which will help to prevent infections. If you smoke, it is important that you abstain for at least 24 hours before your procedure. You will also need to abstain for a set period after surgery to facilitate the healing process and avoid infections and implant failure. Have a DriverYou will need to have a trusted friend or family member who can drive you home from your surgery. If you are provided with an oral sedative, this person will also need to drive you to your appointment. Your driver will need to remain in the waiting area throughout the duration of your procedure, so be sure to have them bring a book or other activity to keep them occupied. Call if You Feel UnwellIf you feel a cold coming on, a sore throat or an upset stomach as the day of your surgery approaches, call us right away. In some cases, it may be necessary to reschedule your procedure until after you are feeling well again.
