How Long Is the Recovery Process for Implants?
At Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery, we offer dental implants as a treatment to replace missing teeth. While they are the newest option available for tooth replacement, they are one of the most popular. They provide numerous benefits over traditional bridges and dentures. Implants are more comfortable, and they are easy to care for. They look, feel and function just like your natural teeth. Dental implants also help to protect the integrity of your jawbone by stopping bone loss that follows tooth loss and maintaining the health of the jaw. Implants do involve a surgical procedure, during which incisions are made in the gums and holes drilled into the jawbone. Because of the nature of this surgical procedure, there is a recovery period involved.
How Long Does Recovery Last?
There is no specific amount of time that recovery takes following dental implant surgery. Typically, healing can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months. The amount of time that it takes you to heal from surgery depends upon several factors. One of these factors is the number of implants that are placed in your jaw. In general, the more implants that are placed, the longer the recovery period. Another factor that affects the length of your recovery period is if a bone graft is needed before implant placement. Bone grafts are used to replace missing bone mass in the jaw, which helps to provide the support implants need. The need for a bone graft can mean a longer recovery period.
The Process of Osseointegration
Osseointegration also plays a significant role in how long your recovery period lasts. It is the process in which your bone fuses to the titanium rods in your jaw, making them stable enough to support your replacement teeth. This is a gradual process, and cannot be sped up. It can take up to 6 months for the bone to fully fuse to the implants. During your recovery, you have several follow-up visits during which time we closely monitor this process. Once the bone has fully fused, we can then begin the process of loading your permanent replacement teeth.
Can Anything Negatively Impact the Recovery Process?
Following your surgery, you are provided with a specific set of aftercare instructions. These instructions are designed to help you avoid any complications during your recovery. However, there are still factors that can negatively impact your recovery.
The recovery time for dental implants varies from patient to patient and is determined by some different factors. When you have fully healed, your implants provide you with strong, stable support for your replacement teeth.
