Changes in Anesthesia Consents for Minors

Posted on 1/8/2017 by Donald Nikchevich
As you may be aware, many new laws have become effective as of the 1st of the year. One that will have an effect on our practice is A.B.2235, otherwise referred to as Caleb’s Law. It is directed at dental anesthesia of minors (considered anyone 18 years or younger).

The first part of this law will require the following language be added to our consent forms:

‘’The administration and monitoring of general anesthesia may vary depending on the type of procedure, the type of practitioner, the age and health of the patient and the setting in which anesthesia is provided. Risks may vary with each specific situation. You are encouraged to explore all the options available for your child’s anesthesia for his or her dental treatment, and consult with your dentist or pediatrician as needed.”

Our office is particularly well positioned to handle the changes in three ways:

First, for patients over eighteen we can provide the same, safe, operator-anesthetist treatment that we have in the past and can modify the anesthesia for younger patients.
Second, we have an AAAHC accredited and Medicare deemed (the highest level for ambulatory facilities) surgical center adjacent to our office. This is staffed by many of the finest physician anesthesiologists in the community. It provides an excellent option for monitored anesthesia care in a non-threatening environment for patients who are minors.
Third, we continue our long history of working at Los Robles Regional Medical Centerwhere patients are able to have their procedures performed in specific situations.

For 42 years our office has had a strong relationship with the medical community and Los Robles Regional Medical Center. We feel very strongly about the long history of safety in oral and maxillofacial surgery and pediatric dentistry with the Operator-Anesthetist model. The Conejo and Simi Valleysand other surrounding areas have many fine practitioners who have been providing safe and comfortable anesthesia to minors for decades. As we start the New Year we are positioned to continue to provide excellent service to our patients.
